Dalbeattie Star 0 v 4 Albion Rovers
Friendly
25th July 2001
Scorers : McLean (19), Smith (36), Harty (81), Carr (87).
This was almost literally a stroll in the park for Rovers as they swept aside the challenge of the locals in the pleasant rural surroundings of Islecroft Park. New signing Charlie McLean made his debut for the visitors, and after virtually one-way traffic from the start, the latest recruit volleyed in a 19th minute Jered Stirling cross to put Rovers into a deserved lead. Dalbeattie were seldom seen as an attacking force and Rovers doubled their lead in 36 minutes when Jordan Smith was on the spot to notch number two from yet another Stirling cross. A couple of minutes from the break, Rovers should have had a penalty when McLean was tumbled in the box, but referee Graeme Allison simply waved play on.
The second period was constantly interrupted by the now normal flurry of substitutions - indeed, of the starting eleven, only three Rovers players remained throughout - and the previous domination of John McVeigh’s lads was somewhat diminished. Having said that, Dalbeattie seldom threatened and Rovers, having adjusted to the changes in personnel, soon regained control. In 81 minutes a brilliant crossfield pass by Stirling found McLees clear on the right and his well-placed cut-back was thumped home by Martin Harty. Then, just to rub salt into the wounds, three minutes from time another McLees pass reached David Carr who gleefully slammed number four into the net.
All in all, a most satisfactory performance by Rovers, and a great confidence booster for the season ahead.
