Refs At Cliftonhill

Yesterday afternoon - at Rovers' invitation - referee bosses Donald McVicar and Drew Herbertson visited Cliftonhill to discuss on-field discipline and associated matters. The meeting, attended by chairman Andrew Dick, general manager John Reynolds and, probably most importantly, boss Peter Hetherston was arranged to clear-up certain aspects of discipline which had been troubling the Coatbridge management, and a few items of video evidence were submitted for comment. We understand that there was a "full and frank exchange of views".

Exhibition Board
With the "Fitba, Fitba, Fitba" exhibition at Hamilton's Low Parks museum now having been closed after its six-month run, Rovers have received return of all the items loaned for the duration. In addition, the club made representation to the exhibition's curator about the large board comprising words and pictures outlining the history of our favourites, and this board is to be made available for permanent display at Cliftonhill. When it arrives in two or three weeks, it will be decided where it should be displayed.

Gretna Agree To Change

General Manager John Reynolds reports that Greta are totally in favour of bringing forward the Ne'erday game to 7th December, when both teams have Scottish Cup first round byes. Application has therefore been made to the SFL for formal permission to do this, and no objections are envisaged.

Gretna Date

Rovers' General Manager John Reynolds today confirmed that the club will be contacting Gretna as soon as possible in an effort to have the ill-fated New Year's Day fixture re-scheduled for Saturday 7th December, the day on which both clubs have a bye in the first round of the Scottish Cup. It is expected that Gretna will have no objection to the proposal.

More On Cup Draw
Boss Peter Hetherston is reported to be very pleased at the outcome of the "Scottish" draw which gives his lads a bye in the first round and a trip to meet Queen's Park in the second. Peter is already on record as saying that the Hampden pitch suits his lads' style of play, and with a win there just a few weeks ago already in the locker, there should be no shortage of confidence about the short trip to Glasgow on Saturday 4th January.

Scottish Cup
Rovers have been given a favourable draw in this season's Tennent's Scottish Cup. Rovers have been give a bye in the first round and are drawn away at Hampden in the second against current bottom dogs Queen's Park. As Gretna have also been given a bye in the first round it seems almost certain that our January 1st tie at Raydale Park will be brought forward to 7th December.

Preston Athletic v Hamilton Academical
Raith Rovers v Dumbarton
Montrose v Berwick Rangers
Stenhousemuir v Brechin City

Forfar Athletic v Huntly

Date for ties: Saturday, 7 December, 2002

Second Round

Peterhead v Elgin City

Date for ties: Saturday, 4 January, 2003

Rovers Slip
An under par Rovers team lost 3-1 to Stirling Albion, despite Charles McLean giving them an early lead. It has to be said that the penalty equaliser for the Binos was a decidedly dodgy decision by the referee, but Rovers hardly looked likely to save any of the 3 points. Stirling leapfrog Rovers to take 4th place as all the other 3rd division games ended in draws

AGM
Before the meeting started, those present were given copies of more detailed financial information which comprised a break-down of those cumulative figures contained in the material sent by post to shareholders. The reason for not having sent this with the original balance sheet was explained. One thing revealed was that the club had received transfer fees for Ian Harty moving to Stranraer and Euan Donaldson moving to Forfar in addition to the widely known transfer of Neil McGowan to Oxford Utd.

Following the meeting having been opened by chairman Andrew Dick, treasurer David Wright apologised for the delay in holding the meeting and went through each of the two years’ accounts, picking out certain items which might possibly have required further explanation. Basically, Mr Wright explained that the club was on a reasonably secure financial footing, having drastically reduced the £30,000 deficit which was outstanding at the end of 1998. At that time, the wage bill accounted for some 74% of the turnover, a figure which had now been reduced to a more manageable 65%. after a couple of questions had been satisfactorily answered, the Financial Statement was approved.

Chairman’s Remarks

In his remarks, the chairman referred to the outstanding achievements of the club’s youth development programme and paid tribute to those who have been responsible for its success. Mr Dick also explained the background to the departure of former manager John McVeigh at the end of last season and although Cathie O’Hare dissociated herself from the general tone of the remarks, there was no other comment.

The chairman informed the meeting that although, during the past couple of years, there had been "many" meetings with the variety of organisations and individuals responsible for the former Airdrieonians and the new Airdrie United, but because of the need to safeguard the interests of Albion Rovers, nothing positive had been forthcoming and that as far as he was concerned, the matter was now dead. Given that Cliftonhill would not last for ever, it would therefore appear that the only viable alternative was to move to a purpose-built stadium within the Coatbridge area. That could still be an option, but a lot of discussion with a variety of people would have to take place first - not the least of which would involve the disposal of the current ground for the best possible deal.

Mr Dick paid a fulsome tribute to David Wright for his sterling work in turning round the club’s finances. He also stated that the ground’s safety certificate was now granted annually without any problem and, in response to a question from the floor, confirmed that the club had complained formally to the authorities about Stenhousemuir’s unethical methods of having signed Rovers’ players train at Ochilview following the end of the season.

Elections

Chairman Andrew Dick and Vice Chairman David Shanks were re-elected to the board without dissent, and in spite of an objection from the floor, Thomas "Chic" Young was elected to the board of directors for the first time. (Later in the meeting, it was confirmed that Alan Brown had tendered his resignation from the board).

After a brief discussion, the current auditors, A M Scott & Company, were re-appointed.

Other Business

Under this heading, various items were raised, including the numbers of complimentary tickets allocated by the various clubs in the Third Division, the timing of future Annual General Meetings, the number of untraceable shares - and how they might be brought back into circulation.

Manager Peter Hetherston, having entered the meeting, was asked to comment on the current the transfer window situation, his assessment of the youth development system and the situation regarding goalkeeper Scott Shearer and the recently returned Paul Bonar. Peter gave a full reply to all these questions.

There being no further business, the meeting was closed by the chairman.

One interesting thing to note at the meeting was the attendance (via proxy authority of shareholders unable to attend) of several non shareholding die-hards. This added to the air of legitimacy of the meeting, although the prospect of shares becoming available for purchase by fans wasn't given much chance by the board.

Scottish Cup
We wont be kept wondering for much longer. The draw for this seasons Tennent's Scottish Cup 1st round takes place on Monday 28th October at Hampden. The first round will be played on Saturday 7th December (if Rovers and Gretna both get byes we shall bring forward the 1st January game to that date).

"A"GM
Tomorrow at noon is the kick off time for Rovers "Annual" General Meeting. This site shall have a report of the goings later in the day.

Reserves Win

Last night Rovers' reserves had a splendid 3-0 win over Hamilton on our rivals' own patch. However, possibly more important than the actual result is the fact that Charles McLean netted twice, with the re-emerging Paul Bonar notching the other goal. Although just a second-string outing, it is good to see McLean re-discovering his scoring touch, with Bonar regaining a reasonable fitness level- and scoring.

SFL To Launch Web Site
We hear that the Scottish Football League is in the process of initiating an official web site which will include some basic information on its member clubs. Albion Rovers will, of course, be included in this and we'll let you know as and when it progresses to a readable stage.

Book
Although
about the late Airdrieonians F.C. this new book " about the late Airdrieonians F.C. this new book "contains at least two items of genuine interest to Albion Rovers fans, one being the reproduction of an early post-war programme for a match between the two clubs, featuring a certain J Stein at centre-half for the Rovers." So says its author Brian Bollen anyway, it costs £11.99 and is available to buy online and in the shops (W.H. Smith etc.).

Shearer Back At "Paradise"

Goalkeeper Scott Shearer hardly seems to have been around much at Cliftonhill in recent times, and this week he is again training with Celtic. The Parkhead club were impressed with the big man during his first stint there and are having another look at him.

(19/10/02)

Rovers Lose In Blue Toon
Rovers lost 2-0 at the Balmoor to two goals in the second half but could easily have scored four in the first half. Despite the loss Rovers remain fourth.

Rovers Go Early

Acknowledging of the importance of tomorrow's match at Peterhead, Rovers' players are travelling north this evening to stay overnight. This professional approach is to be commended and it is to be hoped that the result will reflect it.

(17/10/02)

McStay Banned

Rovers' Assistant Manager Jock McStay, ordered to the stand during the CIS match against Hamilton Accies, has been banned from the dug-out for four matches by the SFA Disciplinary Committee. As a registered play it's just possible he could spend the match on the bench as a substitute (although any coaching would be completely forbidden).

(16/10/02)

Shearer At Parkhead

As today's issue of the Airdrie & Coatbridge Advertiser reports, goalkeeper Scott Shearer is this week training with Celtic - his third visit to a bigger club in just a few weeks.

Reserve Match Off
Rovers were due to play Falkirk in the Reserve League last night, but as the Brockville club wanted the match to be on the Cliftonhill pitch, the decision was taken to postpone the match to save further wear and tear on the already rough surface.

McStay Verdict
As yet, we have had no indication of what punishment, if any, Jock McStay has been handed for his recent ordering to the stand from the dugout. An official letter is expected very soon.

It's Ne'erday Again!
In spite of talks aimed at finding another alternative date, it looks as if Saturday's postponed match with Gretna is certain to revert to its original date of 1st January. The only other date which could conceivably suit would be Saturday 7th December, but as both teams would have to receive byes in the Scottish Cup First Round for this to become reality, it's unlikely to happen.

Comedy Unit Plea
Rovers have received a plea from the Comedy Unit - the people who make the Tam Cowan "Offside" show. They're looking for a representative from each team in Scotland to take part in the Offside mini-cup, a competition for supporters with "interesting, stupid or funny talents/party pieces". At Cliftonhill we certainly have some people who are distinctly odd. Is this enough to win the cup for us? Interested persons should contact Claire at The Comedy Unit on 0141 305 6667 or email claireurquhart@comedyunit.co.uk

D-Day For McStay
Assistant Manager Jock McStay appears before the SFA Disciplinary Committee today to explain remarks made to officials in the CIS Cup match against Hamilton.

(12/10/02)

Under 18's
The under 18 match went ahead today on a soggy pitch at Cliftonhill. Rovers youngsters (many of which were from the under 16 team) were beaten 2-1 by Queen's Park. Chris Mackie put Rovers ahead early on with an impressive goal. QP equalised before half-time with a penalty (pic below) which goalie Kevin Swain almost got to and eventually scored the winning goal well into the second half. Rovers were a bit unlucky and deserved a draw.

Match Off
Today's match at Gretna has been postponed due to Raydale Park being waterlogged. Looks like we'll have no excuse to miss the Scotland game now! It's unclear if the under 18 game v Queen's Park scheduled for a 1pm kick-off at Cliftonhill will go ahead today as Cliftonhill is a bit damp too.

(11/10/02)

No Injury Worries

Manager Peter Hetherston reports that all his players are "fit and well" for the visit to Gretna tomorrow. Following Kevin McAllister's testimonial at Falkirk tonight, the boss will wait to see how the veteran is before deciding if, how and when to deploy him in the important league match.

"Mystery Man" Identified
The mystery candidate seeking election to the board (Thomas Young) is better known around Cliftonhill as Chick Young. As you probably know he does a few things for the club, most notably barman in the Rovers bar.

AGM Papers Posted

Copies of the balance sheet were today posted to shareholders and most, if not all, should be delivered tomorrow. The AGM is, of course, scheduled for Friday 25th October at 12 noon. We understand that only two years accounts have been sent out (years ending 30th June 1999 and 2000). Why the year ended 30th June 2001 isn't included shall, no doubt, be one of the points raised at the meeting.

The accounts are not as transparent as some of us hoped for, they don't give much of a breakdown of income and expenditure. We shall try to work out how solvent the club is (we're not accountants) and let you know. Chairman Andrew Dick and vice chairman David Shanks are seeking re-election to the board (the board members themselves vote on chairman and vice chairman from amongst their ranks). Thomas Young (who?) is also standing for election to the board.

Under 18s Fixture
The next fixture for our senior youth team is on Saturday at Cliftonhill when they will meet Queen's Park with a 1 pm kick-off. So, if you're not going to Gretna (as you should be), why not go along and have a look at the potential first-team stars of the future?

Youths In Cup Defeat
Rovers' under 18s crashed out of the SFA Youth Cup at Meadowbank last night when they went down by 3-1 to Edinburgh City. Coach Jimmy Lindsay reports that his lads had a good opening period but failed to cash in on their chances and eventually paid the penalty. Rovers' solitary counter was netted by Chris Mackie.

'Tizer Speculates On Hetherston

As was probably likely to happen, in today's issue the Advertiser's Bert James links Peter Hetherston with the not-yet-vacant position as Falkirk manager. Is this simply rumourmongering to fill space, idle speculation or something more? It should be noted that Silky is just a few months into a two year deal and that Ian McCall has indicated through the Falkirk website he is staying at Brockville.

Youths Win

Rovers' Under 18 team returned victorious from Peterhead yesterday after beating their Blue Toon counterparts 1-0 thanks to a Ballantyne goal.

Mini-Bus Deal Falls Through
Rovers, who had been hoping to arrange sponsorship of at least one mini-bus to replace the existing high-mileage vehicle, were today disappointed to learn that one of the potential sponsors had withdrawn from the deal. There is however, still hope that the other sponsor will come up with the goods.

Shearer Update
The recent publicity surrounding in-form goalkeeper Scott Shearer has, unsurprisingly, raised his profile and the latest from the rumour-mill is that a Scottish Premier League club is taking more than a passing interest in the big fellow.

Rethink On Child Admissions
Due to an inordinate amount of unrest caused by a number of children at matches, Rovers are reviewing the situation and it is likely that in future children under the age of 12 will have to be accompanied by an adult to gain entrance. There is no desire to prevent the genuine young supporter from getting in free, but the usual minority have spoiled things for everyone.

Quidders Shortfall
General Manager John Reynolds reports that, according to his calculations, a total of £2197 was raised from last season's "£1 a Goal" initiative. While this is indeed a most respectable total, it is around £750 short of what was originally pledged. Those who decided, for whatever reason, not to pay, should have a long hard look at their consciences. They know who they are!

Under 16's
Rovers under 16's went down 5-2 today against Hamilton Accies. Thanks to Jane Knox who supplied the pics.

Disappointing Draw
Rovers dropped to fourth place (although just a point off the top spot) after a 1-1 draw against 8th place Montrose. Surprisingly Charles McLean didn't feature in the squad, we understand he is uninjured.

AGM Date Confirmed

Following last night's Board meeting, it was announced that the much-delayed club AGM will be held on Friday 25th October at 12 noon. It was also confirmed that treasurer David Wright will be in attendance to answer any finance-related questions which may arise.

This date has been set despite the fans forum being told the intention was to have it on a Saturday before a game. The scheduling for a weekday lunchtime is extremely inconvenient for many ordinary folk like your humble webmaster. If the club was serious about having as large an attendance as possible they'd have at least scheduled it for an evening. I shall of course try to get time off work to be there.

McStay Before Beaks
Assistant Manager Jock McStay has been asked to present himself before the SFA Disciplinary Committee on Tuesday 15th October to explain remarks made to officials in the CIS Cup match against Hamilton.

Keepieuppie For Cliftonhill

Apart from the expected good football and three points from the match against Stirling Albion on 26th October, there will be some half-time entertainment of a slightly different mode. That afternoon, we will be visited by Graeme Lightbody from Johnstone, near Paisley, whose ball-juggling (all right, we can do without the funny remarks!) has earned him a number of records, including 22,000 in three and a half hours. Rovers have accepted Graeme's offer to come along and demonstrate his skill to the assembled masses, something he has already done to the fans of Huddersfield Town and Oldham Athletic.

New Transport
Rovers shortly hope to be able announce that a new sponsored mini-bus will be made available to the club. The existing vehicle has served the club well but is now evidently approaching terminal decline and requires to be replaced.

(02/10/02)

Youth Cup Date Change

The SFA Youth Cup match against Edinburgh City at Meadowbank has been brought forward by one day and will now take place next Tuesday, 8th October at 7.30 pm.

Pitch Treatment
Following the manager's criticism of the state of the Cliftonhill pitch, the problem is being addressed this week by the temporary acquisition of an extremely heavy roller. The playing surface therefore should be in better condition for Saturday's game with Montrose.

AGM Date
We understand that the Board have pencilled-in Friday 25th October as the date for the AGM - time as yet unknown - instead of the following day. However, there is a school of thought which says that it would be sensible to have it on a Thursday evening, when the Board members are already at Cliftonhill for their weekly meeting. We'll keep you up-to-date on this one.
