People News
This week saw Rovers chairman Frank Meade retire (I'm sure he'd like me to point out it was early retirement) from his day job as head of the International Billing and Credit Management teams worldwide with BT. This involved a lot of globetrotting so Frank is now free to spend a lot more time with his family and quite possibly Albion Rovers too!

Frank Meade

That perennial figure around Cliftonhill for something like 60 years Jimmy Lawson turned 79 and it's hard to imaging Rovers or the stadium without thinking of Jimmy at the same time!

Congratulations go to both of them!

Bus Update
The bus to Montrose for the opening Irn-Bru league fixture at Montrose next Saturday leaves at 11.30am from it's new departure spot, The Horseshoe Bar situated on Deedes Street on the left up the hill a bit from the fire station.

Celtic Win On Pens
The visitors retained the Jock Stein but had to do it on penalties after the match ended 1 - 1. The Celtic side including several players with first team experience triumphed 4-2 on penalty kicks. The Celtic side could have won the game had their finishing not been of the inept sort during the 90 minutes.

A mini-report with a pic of the Celtic goal and a video of the Rovers equaliser as well as videos of the penalties shall be on the site later.

Pay At The Gate
It's been announced that there shall now be a turnstile accepting cash for entry at tomorrows Celtic match. Admission is £5!

Thistle Win
Partick Thistle took advantage of early defensive frailties to win 2-0 at Cliftonhill tonight. Their first came in 1 minute when failure to clear a free-kick from the box eventually led to a scrambled opener (the video of this goal on report page). The second came a minute later when another mix-up led to a relatively easy tap-in.

Challenge Cup
The draw for the first round of the Challenge Cup was made today and Rovers have been drawn at home to reigning 3rd division champions Berwick Rangers. This shall of course mean the quick return of Tommy Lennox to Cliftonhill with his new team, not to mention old boys Iain Diack, Steven Noble and Jordan Smith.

We presume that the match shall be played on our traditional Tuesday the 14th of August rather than the Wednesday 15th but this has yet to be confirmed.

Jock Stein
With many tickets having been snapped up already anybody still requiring one for this match on Saturday (28th July) had better reserve theirs with the club soon or get along to the Candy Store in Whifflet as soon as possible! At £5 they must be a bargain, especially as it's the same price for adult and child.

The programme for the match shall once again be a one-off special souvenir edition with a face price of £2. There are many articles about the legendary man and it's not just a repeat of last years! As usual the Albion Rovers Supporters' Trust has produced the programme and any profits from it shall go into its funds to aid the club.

If you'd like to order a copy of the programme the cost is £2.75 including postage or £3 if paying by Paypal. Details where to send your cheque or which email address to pay via Paypal can be found HERE. We can also accept direct bank transfer at the lower price - ask for details!

The programmes will be sent out next Monday if ordered in time although please be advised orders sent by post may be delayed due to holidays.

Tour Success
Rovers wrapped up their tour of Northumberland with a 3-1 victory over Lynemouth which went ahead in Amble as the Morpeth pitch wasn't up to it. A seemingly blatant offside goal by Morpeth opened the scoring early on, a trialist equalised and on the stroke of half-time Brian Smith scored from close range. With around a minute of the match remaining Jamie McKenzie smacked a free-kick into the net.

Pics and some video clips from both games are now available via the fixtures page!

Morpeth Match In Doubt
The match at Morpeth tomorrow in doubt due to bad weather. It wont be played at their ground and may go ahead at a public park in the area!

Win On The Road
Rovers started their tour with a 2-1 win over Northern League Champions Whitley Bay at Hillheads Park. Rovers went ahead in 15 minutes when a trialist scored, Bay pulled one back in 60 minutes only for another Rovers trialist to score the winner in 72 minutes.

Pics from this game will be on the site later!

New Signing
Rovers have signed Alan Benton from Sauchie, the defender negotiated the release from the junior side to be free to come to Cliftonhill.

New League Sponsor
The SFL have a new sponsor and it is Irn-Bru who will be pumping £3 million in over the next three seasons. The league had no sponsor last season after Bell's whisky pulled out after several years of sponsorship. Rovers as well as the other 29 SFL teams will welcome the extra cash. New SFL chief executive David Longmuir was instrumental in gaining the deal and is now said to be looking for a TV deal, Irish broadcaster Setanta were rumoured to be interested.

The drink has a reputation for being well marketed and previous slogans include "Scotland's other national drink", and "Made in Scotland from girders". Currently their "Phenomenal" campaign is doing well.

It has been announced that the deal does not include the Challenge Cup which is therefore still seeking a sponsor. The draw for that cup competition takes place next Tuesday.

McKenzie Signs
Jamie McKenzie has become gaffer John McCormack's latest signing, putting pen to paper for a one year deal. 26 year-old midfielder McKenzie was on the books at Partick Thistle and Raith Rovers before arriving at Cliftonhill in 2000. He left in 2002 with manager John McVeigh and a sizeable chunk of the squad to go to Stenhousemuir.

After leaving Larbert he signed for Elgin City with whom he also had a brief but successful time in charge of as caretaker manager, winning a Manager of the Month award in the process. Jamie lives locally and was last in action for Bellshill Athletic. Despite having recently completed his UEFA B coaching licence there's no suggestion he shall be joining the coaching staff.

CIS Cup
The draw for the first round of the CIS Cup was made today and for the 3rd successive cup competition Rovers have been pitted against Arbroath. Rovers of course triumphed on penalties in the Challenge Cup quarter-final at Cliftonhill while Arbroath came out on top in the Scottish Cup at Gayfield.

The match takes place at Gayfield on Wednesday 8th August and kicks-off at 7.45pm.

How We Laughed
Last Friday saw the Albion Rovers Supporters' Trust comedy night held at the Horseshoe Bar in Deedes Street. The night was organised by Rovers director and stand-up comic Pat Rolink who also compered the evening in his own inimitable style leaving nobody in the audience untouched by a well aimed jibe or two.

First on the bill was Airdrie comic Quentin Reynolds who, not unlike Pat Rolink and the man to follow him on the bill drew on their common home town for a large part of their routine. Needless to say this went down well with a mainly Coatbridge crowd! Next up was the young Damon Mullen in his first ever gig, on the evidence shown he should do well.

Last, but certainly not least onto stage came Joe Heenan who is one of Scotland's top stand-up acts who had the audience in fits of laughter from start to end.

Rovers win on the bounce
Last Saturday saw a Rovers side win 3 - 2 against a Greenock Morton side at Largs in a so-called bounce match.

(15/7/07)

Midfield Boost
Gaffer John McCormack boosted his midfield with two signings this week. They are Barry Donald from Forfar Athletic and Calum Adams signed from St. Peters.

(8/7/07)

Players On Show
Yesterday at St. Andrews school sports complex around 30 players took part in a bounce game to show manager John McCormack what they had to offer the club. Most of the signed players also took part in the match which the team in the blue strips won 5-0 on the artificial pitch with occasional torrential downpours punctuating the 90 minutes.

Comedy Night - Reminder
Please remember that the Supporters' Trust has organised a comedy night with the help of Pat Rolink to be held in the Horseshoe Bar this Friday 13th of July starting at 7.30pm. On the bill are Joe Heenan, Quentin Reynolds and some surprise guests. Tickets are £5.00 and are available from the Horseshoe Bar, the stadium or from any member of the Trust Committee.

The bar is located on Deedes Street, a few yards over the border into Airdrie.

Prediction League
The prediction league this year is being run in a different format. It is run independently from this website and can still be accessed using www.albionrovers.info. It's free to join!

Friel Re-signs
Despite being on the list of players freed at the end of last term former club captain and longest serving player Scott Friel has been signed up on a new deal. Joining Scott at Cliftonhill are new boys Robert Walker, formerly of Stranraer and John McStay (son of Willie) formerly with Ayr United. Both are defenders to trade!

There are a limited number of parent and one child tickets at £5 and the remainder are also priced at the bargain price of £5.
