(28/02/02) McVeigh's Moan
John McVeigh was still in shock yesterday after seeing his Albion Rovers side blow a three-goal interval lead to draw 4-4 with Elgin City. McVeigh said, "If I was a betting man I would have staked my mortgage, wife and weans on us at half-time. We were cruising. It was 3-0 going on 20-0 and it was three points in the bag. They didn't have a direct shot at goal in the first half. Elgin got back into the game with two rapid-fire goals in the second half, and our players' mind-set and winning psyche got thrown into disarray." (Daily Record)
In steadily worsening conditions at Glasgow Green last night, Rovers beat old rivals Queen's Park 3-1 to ease their way into the semi-finals of the Reserve League Cup where they will meet Arbroath. Goals by Todd Lumsden, David Carr and Mark McGinniss had the Cliftonhill team well in control before Queen's scored their late consolation. Boss John McVeigh was delighted at the outcome as well as seeing injury victim Lumsden back in action. PS As a result of standing on an unsheltered touchline for ninety minutes, the boss's mobile phone became rather damp and when he reached home he had to take it apart to dry it out!
(27/02/02) Semi-Final For Reserves
With just a quarter of an hour to go Rovers reserves were leading Queen's Park 3-1 in the quarter-final of the Reserve League Cup tonight. We shall let you know the final outcome and who they'll meet in the semi-final tomorrow.
(26/02/02) 8 Goal Shocker
Three nil up and cruising at half time then Elgin come back to 3-2 the heart rate quickens, 4-2 for Rovers B.P.M.'s drop. 4-3 , surely we'll hold on - no a quick free-kick and our promotion push takes a knock.
(26/02/02) McVeigh Hat-Trick
John McVeigh completed an impressive hat-trick when he was named Bell's third division manager of the month for the third time this season. Well done!
(25/02/02) Pitch Playable
In spite of the heavy rain, as of earlier today the Cliftonhill pitch was reported to be in reasonable condition for tomorrow night's postponed fixture against Elgin City. Should overnight conditions improve even slightly, the match should go ahead.
Manager John McVeigh reports that there is little improvement to the current long injury list, with Paul Bonar and Colin Waldie struggling to be fit for the match. The other players - whose names must be very familiar by this time - are still in various stages of recovery.
(24/02/02) Under-18s In Thriller
Rovers' youngsters this afternoon lost 4-3 to a strong Stenhousemuir side at Ochilview. Coach Jimmy Lindsay reports that the damage was done in the first half when the Warriors leapt into a 4-2 interval lead. Rovers had a much better second period but the one counter in that time was not enough to gain a share of the points. Scorers for Rovers were James Coulter, David Carr and Chris Stewart.
(22/02/02) Game Off
Tomorrow's game at Elgin has been called off due to the snow sweeping Scotland.
(21/02/02) Shearer Back
Goalkeeper Scott Shearer, widely reported to have been off for a week's training with Oldham Athletic, actually returned home on Tuesday after having had only one full day with the English club's goalkeeping coach. Scott , however, was very impressed with the set-up - and wages! - at the Lancashire club and obviously hopes that he retains their interest.
Injury Crisis -Little Change
Although Tom Tait is now available for selection and Todd Lumsden and Chris Silvestro have restarted training, the Cliftonhill injury list is still substantial. Paul Bonar, Steve McCormick, Ryan McMullan and Colin Waldie are all suffering from knocks of varying degrees and at least a couple of them must be considered doubtful for Saturday's trip to Elgin. When Martin Harty's suspension is also taken into account, it's easy to see why manager John McVeigh does not have his troubles to seek.
(20/02/02) Under-18's Back In Action
With the extended winter break now at an end, Rovers' youngsters return to the fray this coming weekend when they travel to Ochilview to play Stenhousemuir on Sunday, k-o 2 pm. This is the first match in the new League Cup Section format which pitches Rovers with 'Muir, East Stirlingshire and Hamilton Accies.
(19/02/02) Reserve Game Off
Tonight's Reserve League Cup match at Lesser Hampden was called off around teatime because of a waterlogged pitch. The match has been rescheduled for next Wednesday, 27th February. Manager John McVeigh put the lads through a training session at Cliftonhill although the surface there was also severely affected by water.
(18/02/02) Reserves at Hampden
Rovers visit Lesser Hampden tomorrow night (Tuesday) to play Queen's Park in the quarter-final of the Reserve League Cup. Boss John McVeigh - who is trying to ascertain if suspended striker Martin Harty is eligible to play - will be trying to field as strong a team as possible, but the current Cliftonhill injury situation is causing problems and it looks as if at least seven youngsters will be in the squad. The match kicks-off at 7 pm.
