With the euphoria of the previous weeks cup win still in the air Albion Rovers welcomed back the loan players not permitted to play in the triumph at Berwick. Rovers won with three goals which would have graced any pitch.
Rovers started positively with Tommy Coyne shooting following a Bobby Barr corner only for Scott Gallacher to save. Next up was Alan Reid whose deflected shot had the 'keeper scrambling to save, in the end his hand put it out for a corner which he confidently dealt with.
In 16 minutes Barr scored from 20 yards from an awkward angle at the side of the Blue Brazil penalty box. This spurred the Fifers into action but a low Paul McQuade drive was smothered by Chris McCluskey.
Steven Canning firing over the Cowdenbeath goal preceded former Rover John Gemmell having a header saved by McCluskey. Barr then had a shot of his own too high to trouble the on-loan Rangers stopper, a brace of similarly high attempts from Ross Harris finished the first period.
Half-Time
The second half started similarly to the first with Coyne volleying the ball to Gallacher. Ciaran Donnelly then put in an inch-perfect pass to Coyne inside the visitors box, regrettably for Rovers this didn't lead to a goal.
A minute later a goal was scored but it was one for Cowdenbeath, a corner was headed goalward by Gemmell and McCluskey managed to stop but not hold it. John Armstrong put it over the line from all of a foot out.
It was soon back to the one way traffic and an Alan Benton, Barr one-two was headed past by Coyne. Marc Pollock who had only been on the pitch three minutes went on a run up the centre of the pitch, ending with an unselfish pass which failed to reach it's intended target.
Barr was once more proving a menace to the Cowdenbeath defence unleashing a 25 yard drive which came close to the goal. Then a Rovers free-kick from the half-way line found Todd Lumsden, the tall defender was in the opposition box and his header skimmed across the goal.
In 74 minutes Rovers deservedly regained the lead when a Callan Adam corner reached Benton whose volley almost burst the net. Both sides pushed for further goals to no avail. Until that is a minute into injury-time when Harris reprised his goal from Berwick the week before as it dipped into the goal from 30 yards.
Summary
Rovers climbed to sixth in the table with this victory, just one win off a play-off place. If they can keep it up who knows where they'll end up in May.
