Dumbarton 2 v 0 Albion Rovers
Irn-Bru  League Third Division 2nd January 2008

Attendance : 614

Scorers ~ Dumbarton : Tiernan (53), McPhee (63).

The New Year derby match had an ominous look about it for Rovers when Dumbarton appointed former Cliftonhill gaffer Jim Chapman as manager on Hogmanay but it wasn't evident when Rovers started brightly.

A long clearance from David Scott a couple of minutes after kick-off was inexplicably headed on by a Sons defender to Kenny Wright in space, the striker ran in but could only hit the ball off the legs of David Crawford in the Dumbarton goal.

Callan Adam came close when his inswinging corner was tipped over the goal by Crawford. Wright then took the corner which Craig Potter headed over his own goal for an unproductive corner to Rovers. Another Wright corner came close a few minutes later.

Crawford pulled off a one handed save when Wright crossed the ball into the Dumbarton box for John Gemmell to head to goal. A poor decision by Mr. Collum to allow Dumbarton to take a free-kick a full 10 yards closer to Rovers goal than the offence almost cost the visitors dear when Paul McQuilken hit the crossbar.

A Wright cross into the Sons box was cut out by the 'keeper. In 39 minutes a long ball found Wright on the wing beating the offside trap perfectly and this set him on a run. Once more Crawford cut out the cross to Gemmell in the homesters box.

In injury time a 35 yard free-kick by that man Wright was parried by the 'keeper.

Half-Time

With the wind behind them now Dumbarton didn't take long to score when in 53 minutes a Craig Brittain cross was knocked in by Fergus Tiernan. Rovers tried to hit back but a good Gemmell run was ended with a foul and a Chisholm shot rebounded off teammate Pat Walker.

In 63 minutes it was two for the Sons when 37 year-old striker Brian McPhee gladly received the ball from Brittain as Scott was caught in no man's land. His header evaded the attentions of the 'keeper and defenders.

Watson and Donald missing the target were the remaining Rovers highlights of the second half.
