The romance of the Scottish Cup brought Kingdom Caledonian League outfit Burntisland Shipyard to Coatbridge in this second round match. If the visitors thought their first round win had prepared for what was to come they were rudely awoken when Callan Adam rattled the crossbar with a 30 yard free-kick with just 60 seconds on the clock.
It was Adam who opened the scoring in five minutes when he headed home a Jamie McKenzie corner. A minute later it was two for Rovers as Roddy Hunter blasted a Kenny Wright cross into the net.
Wright then had a go himself, the ball whizzing along the ground only for Gary Mooney to touch it round his post. A rare foray upfield by the Fifers forced defender Robert Walker to put the ball over his own bar from a couple of yards out.
In 22 minutes Hunter bagged his second when he stabbed the ball through a packed goalmouth. With three minutes of the half remaining Gavin Gray hit a long range effort which was a couple of feet too high to trouble David Scott in goals.
Ally Martin then provided the ball to McKenzie whose strong drive was unsuccessful. Just as the half-time whistle was about to sound a corner set up Hunter perfectly to head home for his hat-trick.
Half-Time
Within a minute of the restart it was five for Rovers as John Gemmell struck a 25 yard free-kick into the goal. Not content with their goal tally Gemmell went in search of another goal only for his shot to rebound off 'keeper Mooney. Luckily it fell to that man Hunter who skelped the ball into the net.
Martin had a move fizzle out before he tried a long range shot which Mooney coolly let bounce of his chest with no Rovers personnel in the vicinity. The game became less intense for a while and the Fifers were more composed. In wasn't until the 75th minute that another goal was scored and it was Martin who latched onto a McKenzie free-kick from close to the halfway line. Barry Donald put a low pass into the Burntisland box with which Martin beat the 'keeper.
A Gemmell shot from distance skimmed past the target which was soon followed by Mooney tipping a McKenzie ball over his goal. The scoring was completed with two minutes remaining when a corner whizzed over the Shipyard goalie to substitute Pat Walker who gratefully knocked the ball into the net unchallenged.
Summary
Rovers were expected to win this match which can be dangerous if the players believe it's in the bag. There was however absolutely no sign of this as they went for goal immediately from the kick-off. To score eight when the opposition 'keeper made some good stops bodes well for the next round. It's unlikely that Rovers 'keeper David Scott will have such a quiet time between the sticks again anytime soon!
