Albion Rovers took advantage of postponements to grab 3rd place in the league following
the demolition of Elgin City at Cliftonhill. It was Rovers 5th victory in a row
taking their tally to 19 goals for and 5 against since 30th December. Pre-match
the absence of suspended on-form Kevin Nicoll was a talking point amongst home
fans.
Rovers had a corner awarded within 20 seconds of the commencement of hostilities but it was the visitors who were to open the scoring. In 19 minutes a Steven MacKay corner was headed into Rovers net by Hugh Dickson. Before the enormity of going one down to the bottom side in the division could sink in Rovers were level. A mere 30 seconds had passed since the restart when Iain Chisholm rammed home the ball after Walker and McFarlane had put in some sterling work.
Rovers were on a high and it took just 8 more minutes for them to take the lead, Pat Walker converting a Brian Smith cross. In 38 minutes a piece of farce put the home side 3 - 1 ahead when City man Stephen Low headed the ball into his own net with a teammate on the line only managing to head the ball higher into the net.
Half-Time
Before 5 minutes of the second period had elapsed Rovers were further ahead when City 'keeper Keiron Renton took a maddie and passed the ball straight to the grateful Dave McFarlane who immediately supplied Scott Chaplain with it and the midfield dynamo made easy work of the finish.
Travelling fans (I'm told there were some) were heartened when in 59 minutes when 'keeper Lee Thompson was adjudged to have brought down MacKay which seemed to some as a rather soft penalty. Nonetheless the follically challenged man mountain Martin Johnston sneaked the ball in between the post and the diving Thompson.
In 81 minutes McFarlane got Rovers 5th goal with a low shot from 20 yards. Then just as the stopwatches hit 90 minutes Scott Chaplain who is rumoured to be in his final days as an Albion Rovers player before heading onwards and upwards finished with aplomb!
Summary
Rovers were a tad slow to start but when they got going they just couldn't help scoring!
