East Stirlingshire 1 v 0 Albion Rovers
Bell's League Third Division 4th February 2006

Attendance : 199

Scorers ~ East Stirlingshire : Ure (6).

For the 2nd time in a season at the same venue with the same referee Albion Rovers were beaten by East Stirlingshire, thereby contributing half of their home victories since August just 4 weeks after beating them 4-2 at Cliftonhill. Back from injury for Rovers was forward George Wallace.

Albion Rovers started the match positively but the first notable action was what proved to be the winning goal in 6 minutes. Derek Ure was the scorer after picking up a loose ball around 25 yards out taking it up the wing and slotting it across the pitch into the goal.

A couple of minutes later Jamie Doyle had a powerful shot along the ground easily scooped up by 'keeper Jackson after good lead-up play by a few Rovers men.

A strong and low Paul Tyrell drive was impeded in its progress by another man in black and white. Jamie Doyle had his attempt go straight to Jackson before George Wallace have a much stronger low shot which was also directed at the 'Shire 'keeper.

Gordon Lennon halted an attack on the edge of Rovers penalty area by finessing the ball from the advancing homester. The perennial bottom dogs were dominating this period of the match and Paul Tyrell whose feet seemed to be a magnet for the ball shot wide despite having plenty of time and space to do better.

Towards the end of the first half Rovers fought back somewhat with a Friel cross into the box which was cut out and a good move upfield involving Wallace among others fizzled out. A Donachy cross into the home box gave Chaplain the opportunity to fire from 5 yards out but the 'keeper was in the way.

Half-Time

Iain Chisholm replaced Rovers captain Scott Friel at half-time and the first action of the 2nd period resembled the last of the first when Donachy passed to Chaplain who had his weak shot saved.

'Shire came close in 55 minutes when a Ure shot rebounded off 'keeper McGlynn for Livingstone to blast the ball over an empty goal. Substitute Adam Owen then had a seemingly easy opportunity to clear the ball before Stephen Donachy took advantage but his attempt was blocked and Steven Noble gave the ball too much elevation.

A Walsh shot curled wide of the target and play switched ends for Scott Chaplain who forced Jackson onto his knees to gather the ball in. Soon after George Wallace and then Doyle also gave the ball to the home 'keeper.

Walsh looked dangerous when he was dodging defenders around the edge of Rovers area, he decided to pass to Blair but the resultant effort didn't trouble Gary McGlynn.

Scott Chaplain did well with a run sidestepping several defenders enroute to the goal the resultant shot was the all too familiar theme of the match i.e. straight to the goalie!

With 7 minutes remaining a crossed ball got to Walsh who put in across Rovers goal but Lennon cleared the danger. An overhead kick by an unidentified Rovers man was over.

A decent chance following a corner for 'Shire went wide shortly before Dymock ended a run by sending the ball to McGlynn. The last significant chances of the game fell to Stephen Reid who saw his shot rebound off the East Stirlingshire crossbar and Iain Chisholm whose header was saved.

There were no bookings during the match.

A very disappointing match even for fans of the victorious side. Rovers lacked the necessary spark which was certainly not helped by the catalogue of injuries the club have.
