Albion Rovers 0 v 4 Queen's Park | ![]() |
| Bell's League Third Division 1st March 2005 |
Attendance : 355
Scorers ~ Queen's Park : M. Ferry (56), Carroll (70, 72), Harvey (79).
The unbeaten run had to end sometime and Rovers came down with a bump against their local rivals just 10 days after beating them 3-0 at Hampden. Spiders went into the match with several players missing due to injury and a 'flu epidemic.
Before the 60 second mark was reached Queen's missed a sitter when Frankie Carroll turned one way with the ball and 2 defenders turned the other, with an open goal around 15 yards in front of him he contrived to fire the ball over the bar. Rovers first shot came from Lee Wilson in 3 minutes when he shot straight at 'keeper Crawford.
In 12 minutes some good build up play by the amateurs led to Mark Ferry heading onto Rovers goal line and Chris Fahey scrambling to clear the ball. A follow-up shot didn't pose any real danger.
Tony Quinn was next to press forward when he went straight towards goal but his chip was tipped to safety by Fahey. Quinn came even closer to opening the scoring in 22 minutes when his shot rattled the underside of Rovers crossbar, the follow up shot by Molloy was cleared off the line.
Rovers rallied briefly with Wilson shooting over from close-range and then having another attempt rebound off the Spider 'keeper, a Black shot was also saved.
Jered Stirling missed by inches with a 25 yard free-kick before Queen's Park started to take advantage of their possession once more. Mark Ferry missed the target before good work by Whelan put the ball into the box for Carroll who just failed connect with his diving header.
With 4 minutes remaining in the first half Frankie Carroll clearly controlled the ball with his arm 2 yards from Rovers goal and put the ball in the net but referee Collum had spotted it, oddly Carroll escaped punishment for the infringement. Rovers managed one last attempt on the visitors goal before the whistle when Ricky Patrick put the ball through to John Bradford but his header was stopped by Crawford.
Half-Time
Jimmy Lindsay brought on forwards Wayne Gordon and Marc McKenzie at half-time replacing Ricky Patrick and Danny Black. A poor Harvey shot was easily saved by Fahey shortly after the restart. John Bradford came close with a shot in 50 minutes but Crawford was down quickly to save at the foot of his post.
Queen's deservedly took the lead in 56 minutes when Harvey supplied the pass to Mark Ferry who scored with a low drive from 25 yards. A Mercer header straight to Crawford preceded Harvey hitting the outside of Rovers post from an acute angle.
Lee Wilson had a shot saved by Crawford following a Stirling corner then Frankie Carroll handled the ball once more - this time in the middle of the park but bizarrely escaped with a warning from referee Collum.
In 70 minutes Queen's Park doubled their lead when Carroll flicked a Harvey cross over the diving Fahey. Within 2 minutes Carroll had scored again, this time with an easy tap-in after combining with Mark ferry to create the opportunity in the first place.
Bradford missed the Queen's goal by a small margin once more after a Miller cross before Spiders scored once more. In 79 minutes Harvey showed his skill once again by lobbing Fahey from a tight angle.
Harvey came close twice more and Carroll also had a decent chance foiled by Fahey before Mr. Collum put an end to home fans miseries.
Lee Wilson was the only player to have his name taken by the referee.
Summary
Rovers got precisely what they deserved from the game - nothing! Queen's Park dominated this match from start to finish and seemed transformed from the game 10 days ago - as did Rovers but not in a positive way. Man of the match goes to Chris Fahey despite him being beaten four times as he prevented a much more severe drubbing!
